Tallow (animal fat) was traditionally used by the poorer in society.
Due to being made of fat these candles have a greasy feel to them. When burning they smell strongly of animal fat. Also tallow will run down the side of the candle (gutter) as it is being burnt. As they contain a cotton wick these candles will need their wick trimmed periodically to ensure a good and safe flame.
Cotton wick was popular from approximately 17th Century until the modern wick was invented in the 1830's.
Please keep these candles in a cool place when not in use. Also because they are made of fat they need to be kept in an airtight container as they may attract vermin otherwise.
